What To Do When Creativity is Lacking

Hey guys! Hope you’re doing well! Anyone with a creative mind knows that creativity is like the ocean, it comes in waves. Sometimes the waves are crashing and you have a new idea every hour. Other times creativity is so still and stagnant that it takes an entire week to think of one half decent idea. This up and down of creativity can be especially challenging to deal with when you’re a blogger.

As bloggers, we usually created our little corner of the internet for one big reason. We wanted a space that we could express our creativity and bring our passions to life. So what can you do when you enviably hit a wall and your creativity cup has run dry?

Search Pinterest for Inspiration

This is something I do at least twice a month. With there being so many other content creators out there, I feel we can work together and turn to each other for inspiration. Whether you’re searching up “Blog Post Ideas” or just scrolling on your feed. Something is bound to spark an interest that you can expand upon.

One of my favorite places to browse when searching for inspiration on pinterest is group blogpost sharing boards. This allows you to see what other people in your field are writing about. There is room for everyone in the blogosphere and, seeing something someone else wrote might inspire you to share your story, opinion, or advice on that topic.

Catch Up or Get Ahead on Admin Work

Another good thing to do when you’re having a hard time thinking creatively is to catch up or get ahead in the behind the scenes work. The admin portion of blogging is something no one tells you about when starting a blog, but it’s half the battle in being a blogger. It happens to all of us, our behind the scenes work like emails, replying to comments, filling in the planner with important dates slips away from us. Especially if blogging isn’t your full time gig, it’s really easy to get behind in admin tasks.

This is the perfect time to tackle all the work you’ve been putting off. Promoting previous posts, replying to comments and engaging with others are great ways to stay present in the blogging community with minimal creativity needed. You can also schedule tweets and instagram posts for the week to come and get ahead on promoting previous work.

Take a Step Back

If you’re really struggling with a lack of creativity, it’s possible that you need to just take a step back. Sometimes we can put so much pressure on ourselves without even realizing it. Putting that much pressure on ourselves is going to do the exact opposite of sparking ideas. You’re going to think of a below average idea, get frustrated with yourself, start to doubt yourself and replay that cycle over and over. Having a lack of creativity isn’t the only sign of needing to take a break. I did a whole post on that, which you can read if you’d like.

They always say “you can’t pour from an empty cup” and that applies to your creativity as well. If you need to take a step away and essentially turn off that part of your mind, do it. You’ll thank yourself for it in the long run. I’ve found that the moment I’m not trying to think of something creative, the smallest phrase someone says will spark an idea. I have a project that I’ll be releasing at the end of August and it came about in a simple conversation with my best friend.

Nothing Lasts Forever

Being in a funk when it comes to creativity can be daunting because you never know when something will inspire you next. Everyone knows and expects to not feel inspired 24/7. However it’s less common to realize that, your creativity and inspiration will come back. You’ll go through new experiences that will refill your creative mind. So if you’re struggling, don’t beat yourself up about it.
