A Balancing Act: How To Balance Blogging & Everything Else

Hey guys! Hope you’re all doing well! I wasn’t sure if I was going to get a post up this week because, like the title of this post hints at balancing was hard this week. That’s what inspired this post honestly, I love being open and honest with you guys. It helps me when I can turn my struggles into advice for others. So here we are.

Blogging can take place in many different levels of “commitment”. I put commitment in quotes because I don’t want that to insinuate that you aren’t committed to your blog if it’s not your full time career. What I mean is there are hobby bloggers, bloggers working to become self employed but have a full time job outside of blogging and then there are bloggers where blogging is their full time job. Where ever you fall in the blogging work, it’s a balancing act. So how do you balance everything?

Plan Ahead

Planning is such a crucial key in balancing not just your blog but everything in your life. I’m not saying you need to have a three month calendar color coded with time slots. If that type of planning works for you, do that. If not, plan as far ahead as you find manageable.

I write and edit my posts about a day or so before I post them, that’s the type of planning I find sustainable. However, I do like to at the start of each month think about what type/how many blog posts I want to write that month. This allows me to at least formula ideas so that when I do get a chance to write, I’m not spending much time with writers block. It also allows me to allocate what funds if any I’ll need to spend on props or products for that months blogposts.

Take Advantage of Apps

I’ve talked before about how I do a lot of my blogging work on my phone. Mainly because I work full time so the time I have in front of a computer is limited. A couple months back I wrote a post on my favorite apps for bloggers, and I still find all of them very useful. Whether you have a down moment on your lunch break or use public transportation, apps allow you to be present in your online community at any given moment.

Recently I’ve been loving Buffer, which is an app where you’re able to schedule tweets. I run a comment tread on Wednesday’s at 3pm EST and Buffer has saved me from missing it many times. We get busy and things come up like the dog having to go to the vet or coworkers running late. With the convenience of apps like Buffer, you don’t have to let our real lives interfere with engaging and promoting ourselves.

Accept That Your Human

The whole point of this post is that, being a blogger is a balancing act. Sometimes you feel on top of the world and you’re able to juggle five different things at once. Then other times just thinking about your blog in conjunction with your schedule causes everything to come crashing down. It’s okay if your blog doesn’t fit into your schedule one week. Maybe it does, but you just know if it’s time for a break and that’s okay too.

You aren’t a robot and life happens. I tweeted the other day apologizing for the fact that I didn’t have a post ready for when I wanted and my sweet friend Lauren from Bournemouthgirl reminded me that my blog, and readers will be there when I return. That’s the great thing about blogging, you can make it what you want and for those other times you can make it what you need.

Running on Empty

Clearly I’ve been giving you guy advice on how you can balance everything and, I told you at the beginning that the balancing act is what inspired this post. This week, my balancing act has been non-existent. I’ve been running on empty pretty much all week. I’m getting a sore throat from the crazy weather changes, I’m dealing with financial stresses and I’m traveling across country for the first time next week. After budgeting, picking up late minute items and the endless amounts of laundry I only have energy for Jane the Virgin.

  2. Nice post! I think blogging whether it’s your full time job or a side hobby in addition to a full time job, all require balance. I haven’t been doing a great job at balancing the last few months but I think the key is to “accept that you’re human” and if you can’t fit EVERYTHING in to the 24 hour days we have, that is okay.
    I love that the blogging community is so supportive too! I hope you feel better and have fun on your trip! 🙂

  3. I’ve just enjoyed quite a long blogging break and it was definitely much needed! Like you say, every week is different and sometimes it is hard to fit blogging around our busy schedules. We just gotta put ourselves first and know when we need to take a step back 🙂 Lauren’s advice is so true, our readers will always be there when we return, understand and want the best for us.
